The Achim Windmill is considered an important historical landmark of the city and was in operation as a mill for more than 200 years.
St. Laurentius Church is the largest rural church between Bremen and Verden and Achim’s oldest building. It was likely built on the site of a former pagan place of worship and is a striking landmark of the town. It was first mentioned in a document in 1257, although it is significantly older. Inside the tower is an inscription on which the year 1091 can be made out.
Narrow windows surrounded by thick walls and an imposing church tower: St. Laurentius Church captivates visitors with its Romanesque architectural style. Although renovations have been carried out repeatedly over the centuries, the style remains unmistakable.
The interior of the church is characterized by its Baroque altar and elaborate pulpit. Concerts are still regularly held on the old organ. Thus, the church serves not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural hub that attracts visitors interested in art and history.
The Clüverhaus is the last remaining farmstead of the former 19th-century farming village of Achim. The former farm is one of 14 farmsteads that remained in operation well into the 20th century. Historically speaking, these farmsteads are likely the oldest settlements in the town and were originally all located near the church. The Clüverhaus is a two-post half-timbered farmhouse dating from 1824. Where animals and people once lived under one roof, an inclusive café run by the Waldheim Workshops now operates. It also serves as an important cultural center for the Achim community.
The Achim Windmill is considered an important historical landmark of the town. Originally, a post mill stood here in the 17th century. In 1761, it was replaced by the current gallery-style Dutch windmill. It is 29 meters tall, has two stories, and features a thatched tower. Each of the four sails is 11 meters long. The windmill was in operation for more than 200 years, until 1965. Since then, it has been decommissioned and is maintained by the Association for the Preservation of the Achim Windmill (Verein zur Erhaltung der Achimer Windmühle e.V.). Anyone interested can learn more during guided tours of the mill. The atmospheric setting is available for romantic wedding ceremonies.
Hinrich Klenke was the last cigar maker in Achim, and he continued to practice his craft until he turned 80 in 1965. Since 2003, the exhibition in the Cigar Maker’s Room in the foyer of Achim City Hall has brought those bygone days back to life and offers insight into the long-forgotten craft of cigar rolling: from stripping the tobacco leaves to preparing the wrapper and rolling the cigars.
In addition to the exhibition in the Cigar Maker’s Room, the Cigar Maker’s Monument in Achim’s pedestrian zone and a sculpture in front of the district court also commemorate this trade, which was once an important source of income for Achim.
The Achim carillon is one of the largest in northern Germany. Located right on Bibliotheksplatz in Achim’s pedestrian zone, the carillon enchants passersby. The roof is designed to resemble a tree providing shade, under which people can seek shelter. The perforated metal sheet is meant to symbolize the foliage. Since 1997, the carillon, with its 24 bells, has been playing well-known melodies several times a day. The carillon’s framework was built at the Elfers metalworks in Achim, and the bells were cast at the Royal Petit & Fritsen Bell Foundry in the Netherlands.
