Climate protection: Sustainable concepts for the Future

Sustainability is not a trend in the district of Verden, but a basic attitude. The path to climate neutrality is being consistently pursued with innovative concepts and concrete measures. Climate protection management plays a central role, acting as a coordination point for all activities. The district's climate protection manager, Werner Reichmann, has been coordinating the various projects and ensuring their successful implementation since February 2024. His main task is to draw up a climate protection concept for the areas for which the district of Verden is responsible. The concept is intended to show how the district can advance climate protection in its areas of responsibility over the next few years. It consists of an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, the joint development of a reduction pathway with the minimum target of greenhouse gas neutrality by 2040 and the identification of very specific measures that will lead to fewer greenhouse gas emissions. A central goal is to cover 20% of electricity requirements from renewable energies.

The concept includes measures such as promoting energy-efficient technologies, supporting companies in switching to environmentally friendly production methods and raising public awareness of sustainable behavior.

Protecting the climate with kleVer

At the end of 2019, the climate protection and energy agency Landkreis Verden gGmbH - kleVer for short - was founded by the district and its towns and municipalities. It is the point of contact and interface for all locals, companies and municipalities in the district - the team provides tips and support for switching to a more climate-friendly lifestyle, connects experts and establishes contacts.

With the "Heating properly with wood" campaign, kleVer aims to help reduce local air pollution. The aim is to support stove owners in using their fireplaces in a more efficient and environmentally friendly way. With the "stove driving license", they learn how to operate their wood-burning stoves optimally, reduce their fuel consumption and protect the environment at the same time. Participants report that they have been able to save an average of a third of their firewood consumption.

Since 2023, the energy-saving check has been aimed at low-income households - so-called energy-saving helpers analyze energy and water consumption on site, install free energy-saving articles and give individual tips on how to use energy more consciously.

Green house number - award for climate-friendly construction

In cooperation with ikeo e. V. - the initiative for a climate-friendly energy supply in Ottersberg - the "Green House Number" has been awarded in the district of Verden since 2015. The award for climate-friendly energy solutions and sustainable construction recognizes people who have renovated or built their property in an energy-efficient way that goes beyond the legal requirements - for example by using solar energy or heat pumps. By 2022, 96 buildings had been recognized in the district of Verden. The homeowners receive an individual Green House Number, which can be attached to the house, and a certificate for their exemplary commitment. In this way, the district of Verden puts the spotlight on ecological and sustainable building and inspires people to invest in sustainable technologies.

Promoting cycling - mobility for a sustainable future Future

The city of Verden was successful with its innovative project proposal "Less resistance to cycling". By 2025, 2.8 million euros will flow into the promotion of cycling, 80% of which will be covered by federal funds. Various measures are planned, such as secure bicycle parking facilities, the introduction of repair pillars, rental cargo bikes and the expansion and improved signposting of important cycle paths.

A flagship project of these initiatives is the "Bridge over the Aller": the bridge over the Aller and Wätern rivers is more than just a natural cycle path connection from Verden to Wahnebergen: it is a symbol of the fusion of mobility, Healthcare and climate protection and the successful cooperation between the city of Verden, the district of Verden and the surrounding municipalities. The project is an important step towards strengthening forward-looking bicycle mobility.
